Build quality seems to be on par with canons 50mm 1.8 II maybe a tab bit better but not by much. The yongnuo uses screws for the mount vs canon that uses internal plastic tabs. The yongnuo does not work in liveview with AF turned on. It is also very soft at 1.8 and doesn't get better till 2.8. With that said I got this lens cheap.

The 50 f/1.8 II is a 1990 design, any patents on it are expired 5+ years ago.
