"Some people like to use wide angle lenses for portrait photography. I am not one of those people. If you are somewhat close to your subject, a wide angle lens exaggerates all of the features most people want to have minimized. I would rather use something at or above 85mm to get nice subject feature compression. When used at the longer end (40mm), the 17-40 is not a bad portrait lens - just not my preference."
