Here's a suggestion...
Turn off the multizone auto focus and turn on the single spot, centre frame auto focus. [Look in the manual]
The default is to have the multizone on, but it usually results in the thing closest to the camera being in focus, and that is not necessarily what you want.
The 40D produces images sharp as a tack, but if you use the camera set on Auto it will only do it about 10 per cent of the time. The multizone auto is for sports photographers tracking single moving subjects, for all other types of photography single centre zone, coincident with the metering spot, is the way to go.
