From the examples that I'm seeing the lens is SOFT and not as bleeding sharp as it's supposed to be. The two copies that I've tested - one was extremely sharp. The other wasn't QUITE as sharp. 1/15th of a second should be easy with the IS system on - I'm good for about 1/2 a second handheld with the IS. 1/15th for bleeding sharp, good technique photos, so 1/30th, 1/60th should be quite good.
As for the AF, I've noticed that there are issues with hooked up to any Mark III. Remember that the CPU is much faster on the Mark III and will have overshoot and undershoot problems. You WILL NOT notice this with any other body. 50D, 40D, 5D original, 5Dm2 and even the 1dsm3. They are different focusing systems. 1dm3 has a much faster processor for the AF and the algorithms are a bit different.
Moving, low contrast subjects are a huge issue with the 200/2 and mark 3 combo. On stock settings for the mark 3, you will have the lens hunt back and forth the moment it loses it's lock. By comparison, the 200 1.8 lens just locks on and won't quit. This is for MINOR movement. I've photographed dancers in dark outfits, medium range. About 20 feet away. The 200/2 had major issues when trying to focus - lots of hunting and the handling was ultra jittery. The 200 1.8 didn't exhibit this at all. Mind you, stock settings on the Mark III. Even when the AF speed was knocked down to "very slow" setting on the M3, the 200/2 still jittered.
Print out the Koren 2003 chart. http://www.normankoren.com/Tutorials/MTF5.html
Set the Mark 3 for center focus point only, AI servo on. Orient the chart so that the lines are horizontal. It may also do this for vertical. At a certain distance you WILL get the 200/2 and Mark 3 (NON 1DS) combo to oscillate, overshoot and undershoot. It sounds horrible. I tried some strong horizontal lined targets, semi close spacing. The person next to me with the 1dsm3 thought that my mark 3 had broken - it was quite noisy. So, I switched camera bodies - his 1dsm3 exhibited none of the oscillation problems.
The Mark 3 that I am using has had the mirror fix - just recently had it done. Even before the mirror fix the combo of the Mark 3 and the 200/2 wasn't a very stable one, unless it was on one shot AF. And even then the different samples of 200/2 lenses that I've shot exhibited different sharpness characteristics among them. Marginal, but there were differences.
Canon CAN change the adjustment of some of the elements in the lens. Sometimes the service department does a nice job. Sometimes not. Even when the service department says that the lens is adjusted, it's still not up to par of some of the better samples of the lenses out there. (same types, different batches). But, remember that the lens is still a production, commercially made optic so there will be variances among batches. There will be bleeding sharp ones and there will be dogs.
Nicksan - call up the camera store and see if they have another 200/2 that is a different serial number batch, say a few hundred from the number that you have now. It's a gamble either way but I'd take the slightly quicker way out in this case. Or you can just return it and purchase from another dealer - they will have different batch numbers. For Canon to fully adjust a lens to a critical spec will take them a longer time than just simply exchanging for one."
