The centre AF point acts as a cross-type sensor with lenses whose maximum aperture are f/5.6 or faster.
Canon took a quite long road till they finally decided to implement a decent AF mechanism into their consumer (D)SLRs. However, I found little to complain with the EOS 350D. The AF feels very fast and accurate, even in low light. A few object tracking tests felt very convincing especially when using the central AF cross sensor.
