Fan of the original 6D, I really wanted to like the mark II
By Jakub
Having owned the 6D for the past 4.5 years I've been waiting anticipating the Mark II for a long time. The first copy of 6DM2 I received from B&H in what I can only describe as sub-standard packing had a faulty sensor. The issue became obvious when shooting at night at high ISO. I used 2 different lenses and all the images exhibited the same strange green line anomaly. I also though the low light shots were noisy but I could not pas judgment because the sensor was obviously damaged. I have to say that this was the first time that anything with the Canon label was defective. So, I paid the $40 to ship it back to B&H (I am in Canada). At this point I have already paid an extra $152 for this camera because my Canadian VISA charged me $112 for the CAD-exchange. It took a few weeks and a lot of hassle across the border before I received the new copy. (Unfortunately, B&H did not mark the package as a return or an even exchange so the shipping company demanded I paid $350 CAD duty and taxes which my wife did because I wasn't home to receive the package. However, I already all the border crossing fees including tax, duty and brokerage when I initially ordered the camera so I have now effectively paid this 2x. I've been on the phone with the shipping company, B&H and both are blaming each other and no one is willing to refund this money. I am now at a point where I will likely need to fill out an application with Border Canada and start a tax refund process that may take minimum of 2 months. Until I get this money back I am now $502 CAD in the hole.
About the new copy: I did some testing last night and wasn't able to reproduce the anomaly I was seeing with the first copy of the body but the light conditions were not ideal. However, I did test for low light and high performance indoors because I wanted to see for myself weather the poor performance I keep reading about on the online forums area true. They are. I took the same shots with my old 6D and this new 6D M2 then compared the unprocessed RAW files. The images from the 6DM2 are significantly worse that those from my old camera. The images, although smaller in megapixel count are in every way superior to those produced by the 6DM2. Furthermore, the images from the original 6D are at least stop brighter so the old camera also seems to gather more light.
There are positives; the 6DM2 is very fun camera to use with it's flip out touch screen and very responsive menu functions, fast wifi and trouble-free and responsive smartphone connections. AF features are very nice and a pleasure to use. Using the camera in daylight is really fun and the images are good - before you try to do any post processing involving recovering shadow areas that is.
I really wanted to love or at least like the mark II but I simply am unable to rationalize this being an upgrade in any conceivable way. Upgrade in batches, bells and whistles but a huge downgrade in image quality. I would like to point out that the image quality is not just a little bit worse but significantly worse almost unbelievably so when you actually see the old and new images side by side. It's not only the poor low light/high ISO but IQ across the board; the old 6D draws better, resolves detail better, has better contrast, etc. If the new camera performed on pair with the old 6D it would be a keeper but it is a much worse in terms of IQ and I just can't justify it. If I could I would return the camera today I would but B&H is closed so I will do so tomorrow and hopefully B&H will accept the return because it will be exactly 1 month from the day of the initial purchase. I will save up and eventually upgrade to the 5DM4.
Image examples side by side comparison with the 6D taken in identical conditions with the same lens and focused on the same point. Other examples show the anomaly in the long exposure images - thick green line across every image, no matter what lens was used. Green line was consistent with the orientation of the camera and the issue is really noticeable when over exposing the file in post. I am also worried that Canon's quality control has been lacking with the 6DM2 as I've seen a few posts claiming and showing defects.
Ktos juz napisal, narzekamy, bo chcielismy kupic. Tom77, to bezkrytyczny fan marki, albo handlarz. Polecam testy, a nie opinie Tom77.
